Madrevite

the company

Our company is in Cimbano in the municipality of Castiglione del Lago in the province of Perugia and falls within the “Trasimeno” area of controlled designation of origin [DOC]: a truly fascinating area with incredible views and lush vegetation.
The mainstays of Nicola’s adventure – around which the business and its production are entwined – are Gamay del Trasimeno, Grechetto and Sangiovese, the true exponents of a priceless heritage of identity. “My pioneering experiments began in 2008. I make pure wine to reveal all the intrinsic qualities of the grape cultivar and to raise awareness of the complexity of the area that offers it hospitality and then blends into one.”

Today, the Madrevite wine cellar has been completely restructured. This is where man’s hand works meticulously to preserve and exalt nature’s gifts. A daily challenge and an indefeasible passion for the job: these are the only secrets, which enable us to produce year in year out some personal, complex wines, deeply rooted in the territory.

Environmental and economic sustainability is the principle which inspires and governs our entire business: every effort aims to obtain and preserve a healthy, top quality product, and exalt what nature gives us without any traumatic or artificial interference. We are able to achieve all this by improving soil fertility, increasing environmental biodiversity and eliminating chemicals to manage parasites and pests.
The wine cellar overlooking the vineyards has a fermentation and vinification room with steel tanks equipped with a temperature control system. Fermentation occurs spontaneously without the use of added yeasts to highlight the hard work to select the healthiest grapes with optimal maturity.

Fermentation on the skins varies depending on the vintage and requirements. We prefer soft press and natural fining.  The ageing room holds our historic concrete barrels, the large wooden barrels where the wines age for months before being ready to taste and the small French oak barriques.

This is a borderland between Umbria and Tuscany, lying on a promontory on the western shore of Lake Trasimene: a zone delimited by the ridge of hills that begins facing Cortona and winds for 25 km southwards, passing very close to Chiusi, separating the Valdichiana from the valley of Lake Trasimeno and skirting not only this lake but also those of Montepulciano and Chiusi.

As regards the strictly lacustrine materials, which date from the Late Pleistocene – and, more generically, from the Villafranchian age – one can observe a prevalence of clayey soils (which give greater richness and length to our wines) compared to coarser ones in the higher areas and in the peripheral zones of the terroir in which Madrevite is situated.
